In the 20th Century, music was recorded onto vinyl 12” stereophonic discs meant to be played on what was known as a “record player” – an electric mechanical device with a rotating turntable upon which the disc was “spun”, with a jewel tip riding in spiral grooves into which were pressed striations that replicate all the tones of the original music. Such discs were packed for retail in protective sleeves and cardboard jackets, the package known as a “record album”. The album’s large size and many sides afforded four or more square feet of space for photos, art and other band information, including lyrics, usually printed on a paper inner sleeve. Too often in rock ‘n roll the words can be hard to hear. With available lyric sheets it is simple to follow the poet’s meaning while listening to the music.
In the 21st Century, music is no longer an artifact, but a data stream. Music video provides the listener with images to accompany the music, and like karaoke, some feature scrolling lyrics to enhance comprehension as the words are hard to hear as ever.
